  • March 11 (Tuesday): Prairie Preview XXV, Connie Mutel will speak about her new book, “The Emerald Horizon”.  Event dedicated in Paul Christiansen’s memory.  4H fairgrounds, Old Hwy 218 S, Iowa City.  For more info: 319.857.4741, www.jcht.org
     

  • April 19 (Saturday):  Prairie Rescue at Breen Prairie by INHF.  Other events listed here as well.
     

  • April 26(Saturday), 10 AM.   Cinder Path Earth Day Workday.  Earth Day Prairie Rescue, April 26 Humeston Cinder Path; Wayne County.  Location:  Prairie remnants are located north of Humeston along the Cinder Path.  Volunteers will meet at the trailhead north of the restored depot at 9:00 AM.  For directions, take Hwy 65 to the town of Humeston, turn east on Fletcher and drive one and a half blocks.  The trailhead will be on the left. The restored depot and RV park will be on the right.  Site Information:  Volunteers are needed to help remove invasive shrubs and
    trees from prairie remnants bordering the former railroad right-of-way.  We will be hand cutting dogwoods, honeysuckle, prickly ash, and eastern red cedar.   Volunteer Information:  Volunteers are encouraged to bring handsaws, loppers, work gloves, and appropriate footwear.  Lunch will be provided.Contact:  For more information, please contact Brant Schmell, (641) 898-7534,brants7@iowatelecom.net

  • May 15, (3rd Thursday), 6:30 pm. Lake Hawthorn Hike. Our evening hikes at this diverse native prairie will be the third or fourth Thursday of the month from May to September. Later in the season we will problaby get to do some seed collection, too.   Meet at the boat ramp parking area on the east side of Hawthorn Lake. This is on Victoria Ave. (one mile east of V13) and about 2 1/2 miles south of Barnes City or 3/4 of a mile north of the intersection of Victoria Ave and 130th Street.

  • June 21, (Saturday), 9:30 AM. Martha's Prairie Hike.  Bring lunch.A look at a work-in-progress, Martha Skillman's prairie with Mark Widrlechner.  Mark is know far and wide as "Mr. Rubus" and will help us identify different species or Rubus and other flora.  We'll take our lunches to a nearby county park, then decide what other local prairies to inspect.  This prairie can best be reached from Medora, where G76 crosses Hwy 69. Medora is about 15mi south of Indianola, 15mi north of Oceola, and 11 mi west of Lacona. Prairie is West from Medora on G76 2mi, North on 90th Av to Union St.,then west on Union to prairie on south side. Last 1/8 mile is dirt road, if muddy park on gravel.
